There’s something truly special about photographing families outdoors, and Sutton Park, just outside Birmingham in Sutton Coldfield, is one of my favourite locations to do just that. I have lots of clever tricks up my sleeve to get toddlers to look at the camera, without feeling like they’re posing.

Sutton Park offers a variety of beautiful backdrops, from open heathland to woodland paths. It’s one of the largest urban parks in Europe. It’s right on the doorstep for families in Sutton Coldfield and easy to reach from most parts of Birmingham. The mix of nature and convenience makes it a brilliant choice for family photography. I believe the best photos come when families are relaxed, which is why my sessions are always easy-going and unforced. Whether your kids are shy or bursting with energy, we’ll follow their lead. There’s no rush and no awkward posing just a focus on real moments, like cuddles, laughter, and being together.

Parents often tell me how surprised they are by how enjoyable the session was, especially when they were nervous beforehand. My goal is always to make it feel more like a family adventure than a formal shoot.

Play-Based Photography: Perfect for Toddlers

If you’re a parent of a toddler, you’ll know how tricky it can be to get them to sit still, or even look at the camera!  My family photoshoots are play-based. So instead of forced smiles and poses forced smiles, I encourage movement and interaction.

All of this means your child can relax, be themselves, and most importantly, have fun. And those genuine smiles and snuggles? They make the best kind of photos. This lovely family had lots of fun and the personality of their adventurous toddler really shines through in the photos.
